I just added this book to my Amazon shopping cart. It was suggested by Garr Reynolds on his posterous blog here: Garr’s Posterous Blog

He recently experienced the passing of his mother, and someone he knows suggested the book to him. In recounting his trip to the U.S. to see his mother, he posts this quote from the book:

“Death is only one thing to get over. Living unhappily is something else. So many of the people who come to visit me are unhappy. Why? Well, for one thing, the culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. We’re teaching the wrong things. And you have to be strong enough to say that if the culture doesn’t work, don’t buy it. Create your own. Most people can’t do it. They’re more unhappy that me—even in my condition.” — Morrie Schwartz

Every word above is true. It’s something I’ve always fought against. I’ve always “tried” to go against it, and now I will. I will now live to make myself happy, and not worry at all about what people think. It is my life, after all, and I need to be happy with it, and in it.

This is also a book I wish I’d known about before my aunt passed on. But now I’ll have it for the rest of my life.

I’ll write a review of the book, and what it’s done for me, once I’ve read it.

I received this tweet on my Palm Pre from @twitter, and got a little excited, til I read the article.

twitter: Forget the VJ: @MTV is looking for a Twitter Jockey http://bit.ly/9IbBRW

Great idea, but the fact that they want this person to reside in NYC, and work in-house, shows me this company is not quite ready for change. At least, not the “Online” Social Media kind of change.

I’d much rather work from my fantastic location in SoCal. I could just as easily report/tweet from sunny SoCal. From our fantastic beaches – Newport, Laguna, Huntington, Santa Monica, Venice, Malibu…should I go on?

I’m only a mile and a half from one of these beaches. Why would I want to pack it all up for a six figure income in NYC?? Especially with the 2010 U.S. Open of Surfing WPS All-Star Event happening in Huntington Beach in a month?? Hello! I could be the on-site MTV-TJ and tweet away, while snapping photos and uploading them with my Pre. I could do this for just about every local event.

Don’t get me wrong, NYC is gorgeous. But I moved out of the east coast (after 20+ years there), and back to SoCal for the weather, something NYC can’t beat.

If MTV is still stuck on having their TJ reside in NYC, maybe they’d be willing to hire two (full or part-time) – one East Coast, one West Coast?

Employer Benefits – Cost Savings:

higher productivity

reduced physical plant costs (parking, office space)

eliminate travel expenses to the west coast (I’m already here)

reducing carbon footprint (read article below)

Just a thought.
